MCA Swimming

Med-City Aquatics was founded on the belief that competitive swimming is an exciting and worthwhile experience. The principal objective is to provide an exceptional swimming environment that fosters the individual growth, goal achievement and development of swimmers of all ages. Med-City offers three swimming programs: an introductory swim school, a competitive swim team, and a masters swim program.

Med-City Aquatics Swim Club is a family-based swim program. From novice to advanced skill levels, casual to serious athlete, youth through adult, we have a place for you! Take lessons through our swim school, join the swim team, or swim with other adult masters.

The purpose of Med-City Aquatics is:

  1. to provide the youth of Rochester, MN and the surrounding area with a positive team swimming experience.
  2. to teach the values of teamwork, responsibility, sportsmanship, leadership, and physical exercise in a family-oriented atmosphere.
  3. to provide a program that allows for each individual athlete to reach his or her potential, regardless of the level of development, talent, or desire.

Med City Aquatics groups swimmers according to age and ability. There are multiple options for number of workouts per week for a swimmer depending on the interest and commitment level. As with any sport the higher the goal of achievement, the more commitment an athlete will have to make; however, the coaches strive to provide a positive experience for swimmers of all commitment levels. Sessions start dates typically are; September (Fall), December (Winter), March-April (Spring) and June (Summer). Registration information will be available several weeks in advance of each session start.

Swim School

The Med City Aquatics Swim School is organized by Assistant Coach Jessica Koepp. The swim school uses a unique learn-to-swim method. We introduce swimming lessons to children as young as 3 and teach children up to age 12 with lesson experience.

Requirements:

Each Season of swim lessons is broken up into several sessions. In the fall, winter, and spring Season each session consist of either M/W, Tu/Th, or Sunday classes. In the summer Season swim school sessions run every day, Mon -Thurs, for two weeks throughout June and July. Classes are 30 minutes in length.

In Swim School lessons children learn skills from water acclimation to advanced freestyle and backstroke skills. All Swim School levels are offered during each session so that families can have children of different levels swimming during the same session.

Swim School lessons focus on the elements of balance, breath control, sculling, and rhythm. Easy movements and lots of repetition are key to the successful swimmer. Instruction is mainly in the freestyle and backstroke with some introduction into breaststroke and butterfly. A forward dive is also taught as well as personal safety and survival skills in the water.

The program is a progression of skills based on those that are taught at the previous level. The first two levels are ideally taught at a one instructor per two-swimmer ratio. The remaining levels are taught in at approximately 1:4 ratio. Some lesson groups of more advanced swimmers may have a larger swimmer to instructor ratio.

Classes are taught in a positive environment based on praise and reinforcement to motivate each child to do his or her best. Med-City Aquatics Coaches, Senior Swimmers, and Aquatic Instructors teach the Swim School classes. Instructors at all levels get into the water and work one on one much of the time. Instructors may have a Swimmer Assistant that supports them when teaching lessons.

Students new to our program may need to attend a skill evaluation session held prior to each session. An instructor will evaluate the swimmers abilities and place them in the correct swim lesson level. Please always preregister for swim school.

If a student withdraws from class prior to the start date a $5 per student administration fee will be deducted from any refund. There are no refunds of fees after classes begin. Confirmation of registration and class assignment will be made via Email before the swimming lesson start date.

Goggles are recommended for all students.

Swim Team

The Med City Aquatics Swim Team Program is for all swimmers who want to improve their swimming skills and, if desired, participate competitively. Swimmers are placed into swimming levels based on factors such as: experience in the sport, training ability, commitment level, practice attendance requirements, physical maturity, and Coach’s judgment. One of the basic premises of the Program is that a swimmer will only feel comfortable and excel if they are allowed to be in a group that is a good fit for them.

The Med City Aquatics swimming level progression is: Blue, Red, Bronze, Silver (Fitness Lite), Gold (Fitness), Regional (Power), and High Performance.

Swimmers new to the program may need to attend a swimming evaluation to help determine the swimming level that best fits their skills and abilities.

Competitive swimming age groups are defined as: 8 & Under, 9-10, 11-12, 13 -14, and Senior. During competitions swimmers will be competing with others in their own age group.
